How to Start a learner Council and Run it Effectively

Student councils and the activities linked with them differ across separate schools. Here are some base tips that will help you start and run a student school council that is beneficial both to the students and the school.

What should a student council do?

  • It should address the concerns of the students and come with ways to sort out problems if they are genuine. In the process, the council becomes the speculate for all the improvements at school.
  • Organizing events of interest to the students and those that give an opportunity for students to showcase their talent is also an important role that should be played by the student council.
  • It should promote parent teacher interaction which will advantage both the students and the school. A sort of mutual insight is thus established in the middle of the students and the school authorities.

How to make your school council effective?

Organize: learn about the interest of students straight through surveys and make a list of activities which they may like. But don't stuff the curriculum with activities only. Prioritize and provide something holds maximum interest of students.

Selection of council members: all things about the council depends on the students complicated in it. It is important that members of the council are enthusiastic, proactive, vigilant, co-operative with students and have leadership qualities.

Group meetings: group meetings should be held at regular intervals of time in order to discuss discrete aspects of functioning of the student council. Ideally members of the student council, volunteers, class representatives, teachers, counselors must be a part of the meetings.

Student interaction: These councils are ultimately for the advantage of the students. So all the activities conducted should be student pro. Involve the students as much as possible. Encourage suggestions and ideas by them.
